Understanding Metaverse (and Comparing it With Multiverse)

metaverse

Most people are looking forward to the third release in Marvel’s Spiderman film series i.e. Spiderman: No Way Home, which is set to hit theaters in December 2021. The movie features your friendly neighbor(hood) Spiderman, the master of mystic arts Doctor Strange, and the concept of parallel realities i.e. multiverse. But what is a metaverse? Let’s see!

What is Metaverse?

To put it in simple words, it is the collection of all the virtual shared space in the world. Metaverse can be summed up by the following (imaginary) equation:

Metaverse = virtual worlds + augmented reality + the internet

In a sense, the meta-verse is the next step in the evolution of the internet. It is the futuristic internet that comprises of persistent and shared 3D virtual spaces that are hard to distinguish from the real world.

Businesses competing for earning the top spot for the keyword “metaverse” is evident by the following keyword overview taken from SEMRush:

This shows the competition that organisations are already facing to get displayed on the top ranking of Google SERPs for offering metaverse development services. That’s how powerful the concept is!

What is Facebook’s Take on Metaverse?

Although the concept of metaverse has been around for a long time – in the science fiction genre – it was the recent announcement made by the Facebook CEO, Mark Zuckerberg that made the world go gaga over it.

Zuckerberg tried to acquaint his employees with the concept of meta-verse and Facebook’s fate depending on the same. Facebook will try to seamlessly weave the web of virtual reality with the real world, forming a synergy between the two.

“I DON’T THINK THAT THIS IS PRIMARILY ABOUT BEING ENGAGED WITH THE INTERNET MORE. I THINK IT’S ABOUT BEING ENGAGED MORE NATURALLY.” Mark Zuckerberg

Metaverse vs. Multiverse

While meta-verse is connected to the virtual space of our reality, multiverse talks about multiple, possible realities that go hand in hand. The concept of the multiverse is suggested by quantum mechanics.

On the other hand, Neal Stephenson was the first one to use the concept of the metaverse in his 1992 sci-fi novel Snow Crash. Hence, you can see that there is no relation between metaverse and multiverse even though both seem similar.

Conclusion

Metaverse is a complex concept that has no clear definition and lies on the far right end of the complexity spectrum when it comes to offering a clear meaning for the layman.

Hopefully, over time, the advancement in the internet and augmented reality space will make it more palatable even for non-techies. We will bring you all the latest updates as we get them. Until then, take care!
